Dawson
(Australian Kelpie)
Noonbarra Dawson
September 13, 2000 - May 8, 2007

Dawson arrived in December of 2000 from NSW, Australia. Australian Kelpies are renowned for their stockyard and herding work in their native country. These tough little workers are slightly smaller than the Canaan Dog and have completely different companion abilities.

Kelpies tend to be a one-person dog, whereas the Canaan Dog bonds to the entire family. This is a breed that will live for the simple praise of their owner. They are quick learners and usually ‘get it’ after one or two attempts. He willingly performs tasks as often as requested without boredom.

By the age of 5 months, Dawson graduated Beginner Obedience and Puppy Agility. He mastered all of the basic exercises with ease. He was the only puppy in class that could work off-leash the entire hour. Dawson’s unwavering attention and eagerness to do things right, make him a joy to train.

Kelpies are hard workers, but have a very sensitive mind. Dawson is the equivalent of the 'baby' of our family…and admittedly, he is spoiled rotten by me (Renee). Dawson and I share a very deep bond. He is a very affectionate, sweet boy and offers me unsurpassed companionship.

Unlike his high-energy herding counterparts, such as the Border Collie, Kelpies make easy house pets. They do not need excessive amounts of exercise to be well behaved. Similar to the Canaan Dog, Kelpies are energy conservative indoors.
